Our Story
In 2006, leaders at Neighborhood Church asked themselves a powerful question: “If our church disappeared tomorrow, would anyone care except us?” This sparked a movement to serve our neighbors rather than just ourselves. We began in the Houston School neighborhood of north Visalia, starting with small acts of kindness like hosting a fall carnival and providing backpacks and shoes for kids. Over time, this partnership grew into weekly parent groups, community service projects, sports leagues, summer camps, mentoring, and even building a public park.
As our relationships deepened, we witnessed the devastating impact of poverty on children and families. We knew we had to do more. Today, we’re tackling generational poverty head-on with an innovative approach that empowers our neighbors to thrive.
The Problem
In the Houston School neighborhood, 95% of families live below the federal poverty line. Poverty’s effects ripple beyond one community, impacting health, education, the economy, crime rates, and more throughout our city.
Addressing poverty isn’t just compassionate—it’s smart economics. By ending poverty, we improve public health, reduce crime, and create a more prosperous future for everyone.
Our Solution: Ending Poverty Benefits Everyone
At Neighborhood Degree, we believe programs don’t change people—people change people. Research from Harvard economist Raj Chetty underscores that resources and relationships are key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Communities with stronger economic connections experience higher rates of upward mobility, reduced crime, and better public health.
We’re building a movement centered on relationships that:
Raise ambition by showing what’s possible.
Provide vital information, like how to apply for college or financial aid.
Open doors through networking and mentorship.
The Vision: A Community Center to End Poverty
To amplify our impact, we’re raising funds to construct a 4,800-square-foot community center—a launchpad for the next generation. This space will include:
An Educational Hub: Workshops, mentoring, and leadership development.
Kinder to Career Pathway: Programs from kindergarten through college to prepare students for careers that lift families out of poverty.
A Resource Center for Families: Job training, financial literacy, and access to community services in partnership with other organizations.
A Community Space: A venue for family events, cultural celebrations, and peer support, fostering stronger social networks.
We’re inviting you to join us in this transformative mission. Here’s how you can help:
Capital Campaign: We’ve raised $600k of our $3 million goal. Your support can help us reach the finish line.
Donor Recognition: Opportunities include naming rights for the auditorium, classrooms, or offices, as well as recognition at groundbreaking and grand opening events.
Sponsor Students or Programs: Provide laptops, scholarships, or fund programs like our Soccer League or College Visit Trips.
Volunteer Opportunities: Be a mentor, coach, or professional advisor. Visit www.NeighborhoodDegree.org to learn more.
Stories of Impact
Three Sisters: Raised by a single mom who volunteered in our parent group, Edna is now a graphic design major at COS, Luzicel studies international business at Stanford, and Lizzette is preparing for college applications.
Joselin’s Journey: A welding graduate of our “Launch” program, Joselin secured a job in Colorado that will lift her family out of poverty.
Gangs to Golf: A student transformed through mentoring—from gang involvement to applying to college and trying out for the golf team.
Closing: Join Us to End Poverty
Each year, we connect over 300 families with life-changing resources and support. We mentor 250 students, guiding them toward college and technical careers. Our programs create a ripple effect that changes lives and transforms communities. By supporting Neighborhood Degree, you’re not just funding a building—you’re investing in our city’s future. Together, we can end generational poverty, one student at a time.
